Villa 20 is a light and bright beach vacation home.  At 1,200 square feet it is a little house that lives big.  Most walls are filled with windows and when combined with vaulted ceilings in the guest room, kitchen and main living area it lives larger than it is.

The living room is equipped with sofas arranged for easy conversation or television viewing. The flat screen TV and DVD/VCR player and DVD collection were added for those few hours that you would rather be inside than out. We are continuously building our DVD collection and the house is filled with good books.  Check the baskets under the table for books and games. The television stand also contains a stereo with radio and CD player.

Overlooking the main living area is a sitting area in the front of the loft.  The view from the loft chairs is out to the lagoon in the back yard.  Just off this sitting area is an upstairs deck with rocking chairs and side table. This is a favorite spot for morning coffee, with views of south beach, “Old Baldy” to the north, and the 18th fairway to the northeast.  At night the star view is incredible from the chairs. Because Bald Head is a sea turtle nesting island and well offshore and away from the mainland lights, it tends to be very dark at night on Bald Head. You may see stars that you have not seen for years at home. The serenity of the night sky is disturbed only briefly by the flash of the Oak Island Lighthouse.

Just off the main living area is the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen has everything you need to fix dinner at home if you desire. We added new everyday china, silverware and glassware. There is also a complete set of unbreakables in case your crew works better with those.

Across from the kitchen is a full bath that opens to the hallway and the guest bedroom. This bathroom was fully renovated in February 07.

The Guest bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and views of the ocean from the two windows on the front of the house.  There is a queen size bed, two closets and a dresser to hold the few things you need for a beach vacation.  A ceiling fan keeps the air moving.

Down the hall in the other direction and immediately off the main living area is the Master bedroom. There is a king size bed in the master bedroom.  The view from the master is to the lagoon and toward the golf course.  The master bedroom is also equipped with a ceiling fan, two closets and a dresser.

The master bedroom has a 3/4 bath (shower) with single sink.

You can also use the outdoor shower - which to me feels more like vacation. A small changing room was added to the outdoor shower in February 07.

Upstairs there is more sleeping area in the loft.  In the back of the loft area is a bedroom with two twin beds and a closet. Like the other bedrooms, it has a ceiling fan to move the air. There is direct access to the upstairs deck and a view to the ocean from the loft.

We added a solid railing wall to provide additional privacy to those who sleep in the loft. But realize, that the front of the loft is open to downstairs and so is the stairwell - so noise travels up from the main living area.  The door visible in the sitting area leads to a half bath.

Outdoors at the Villa

But the real reason to come to Bald Head is not in the house, it is the outdoors.  The house sits in the best part of the South Beach environment and is situated to take advantage of the location. There are decks on all three living levels of the house. We added a shady ground level wrap around deck with benches in February 07. There is also a deck off the main living area and kitchen to the rear of the house.  From there you look onto the lagoon and beyond to the 18th fairway.  The lagoon is filled with turtles, fish and an occasional visiting alligator. You’ll see cranes, Great Blue Herons, ibis, egret  and our favorite - the diving cormorants. Like penguins, these birds will swim the length of the lagoon under water fishing for their dinner.  We have put some Adirondack chairs out there to relax and keep an eye on the lagoon activity.

The view from the upper deck out front is across the street to South Beach.

Beach access over the protected dune is just across the street and a few steps to the west. We always walk but you can certainly take the golf cart and park it over there if you so choose. In the off season you will likely be the only ones on the beach.  During peak season it is not unusual to only have 3 to 5 families there at any one time.  If you are more comfortable with larger groups you can drive the short cart distance to the east end of south beach.  If you want total seclusion go to the north end of East Beach.  This picture was taken from a 10 minute walk point on East Beach at the peak of the summer season from the north looking back toward the Cape Fear Point.

Any of the beach access points toward the east end of South Bald Head Wynd will provide you with more company than you will have in front of the Villas.  Parking at the Shoals Club and using our membership to get towels, chairs and umbrella pretty much will assure you of seeing more people.

The great thing about beach life on an island is you get to pick your surf conditions. If the wind is coming from the south and surf is up on South Beach and you were hoping to take the baby in for a calm swim - no problem - you just head over to East Beach and it will be flat.  If you want to boogie board on the waves you just stay right there on South Beach.  If the surf is rough all over (seldom the case) it might be a good day to go explore the marsh on the north side of the island.  There are hiking trails for the landlubbers and canoe rentals for the water explorers.

At the end of the day you have several good sunset options.  You can pour yourself a drink and stay right on the upstairs deck or walk across the street to plant your feet in the sand.  Or you can jump in the cart, run over to West Beach and watch the sun go down over the Cape Fear River  If you have not seen dolphins all day on South Beach, this is also a good time to catch them going up the river.
